is the story of how I fell in love with Fjords. The horse I owned
before I was introduced to the Fjord breed was a Thoroughbred. He was an
ex-race horse and never really got over it. After I retired him (for the
safety for all involved), I was told by a talented trainer that her neighbours
had two ponies for sale in their back yard. She knew I was looking for a
tall, dark gelding of sport horse type and she warned me that these ponies
did not fit that description but she said they were cute, smart and safe.
Because I trusted her opinion, I decided to go and see them that day. Well,
nothing could have prepared me for that first meeting. There in the dusty
paddock were two dun ponies: Zada - tall, thin and kind of odd looking (He
was a Fjord / Arabian cross); and Magic, a Fjord mare, much shorter at just
over 13 hands and with the sweetest face you could imagine. I only had eyes for Magic. Right there in the paddock I jumped on bareback. All it took was two minutes on her back for me to fall totally in love as I felt a complete sense of safety and security washing over me. I wasted no time arranging to come back the next day with a trailer. Even though she'd only been trailered twice before in her 16 years, as soon as she saw the bag of hay inside she hopped right in. She turned out to be everything I could have hoped for, going everywhere and trying everything I asked of her. She was also a wonderful teacher for my six year old son, Ahren. So, luckily for me, I didn't get what I was looking for but instead ended up with a short, pale coloured mare. And that turned out to be only the beginning ... (Here are some more pictures of Magic.) |
